Earlier the Maharashta government had indicated that the decision to allow the general public in local train will be taken by the first week of January. They has also shared that it would be taking into account the coronavirus cases at that time. Now that 2021 is here and people are done with the celebrations, they are waiting with baited breath to know what the decision is.

On January 8, Advocate General Ashutosh Kumbakoni, who appeared for the government, told the High Court that the decision to start Mumbai's suburban train service for all will be taken by mid-January.

The lawyers' union has filed a petition seeking permission to allow local travel to lawyers as the lower courts, including the High Court, have started functioning at full capacity. Following the court's intervention, lawyers have been allowed to travel locally at specific times. However, the advocates are still not allowed to travel by local between 4 pm and 7 pm. Uday Warunjikar pointed out to the court that some people travel even during rush hour after being given a return ticket.

The petition was heard before a bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Girish Kulkarni. At this time, the court asked the Advocate General about allowing local travel for the general public. The Justice's Administrative Committee of suburban trains recently met with the Bar Association.

The chief justice drew the attorney general's attention to that at Friday's, January 8, hearing and also requested that the matter be heard on Wednesday, January 13.
