Maharashtra government reverses its decision to lift curbs in 18 districts

The lockdown-like restrictions across Maharashtra were imposed on April 15, during the peak of the second wave of the pandemic. At present, the state government has extended the lockdown till June 15. Shops have been allowed to open from 7 am to 2 pm.

Hours after announcing the decision to unlock the state, the goverment announced that there will be no unlocking as of now. In the clarification that the govenment issued, they mentioned that the proposal was still under consideration and they will be making annoucements in due course of time. 

Earlier on June 3, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maharashtra government had announced that a five-level unlocking has been prepared on the basis of positivity rate and status of occupancy of oxygen beds in the districts.

They had mentioned that the extent of unlocking will vary from district to district ranging from level 1 to level 5 — level 1 being the one allowing maximum relaxations.

Moreover, Maharashtra Minister Vijay Wadettiwar had stated that the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions will be completely lifted in 18 of the 36 districts from tomorrow, June 4.

As per him, the 18 districts that fall in level one, which will see complete unlocking from June 4, included Thane. While Mumbai is in level two.

"We have prepared a five-level unlock plan for the state on the basis of positivity rate and status of occupancy of oxygen beds in the districts. Districts with the lowest positivity rate will have no restrictions,” Maharashtra minister Vijay Wadettiwar was quoted by ANI.

As per the new guidelines released by the state government, districts with the lowest positivity rate - below five per cent and oxygen availability is within 25 per cent will have no restrictions. In addition, there will be some restrictions on those coming from other states, orders will be issued later.

He had also mentioned that the lists of the districts falling under these five levels will be reviewed every week for further amendment — the districts can move up and down based on their daily cases.

Which districts were listed in Level 1?

Thane, Aurangabad, Latur, Nanded, Jalna, Parbhani, Buldhana, Nashik, Jalgaon, Dhule, Nagpur, Bhandara, Gadchiroli, Chandrapur, Gondia, Wardha, Washim and Yavatmal.

What will be allowed in Phase 1?

  • Restaurants, malls will be allowed to operate
  • Gardens, walking treks will open
  • Private, government offices will operate 100 per cent capacity
  • Film shooting will be allowed
  • Theaters will operate at full capacity
  • No limit on attendees for public events or wedding ceremonies
  • E-commerce will be allowed to operate with full capacity
  • Gyms, saloons, parlour, wellness centers will be allowed to remain open
  • Buses allowed to operate with 100 per cent capacity
  • Besides, there will be no curfew imposed in this level.

What will be allowed in Level 2?

  • The Level 2 districts will reopen partially with gyms, salons, beauty parlours functioning at 50 per cent occupancy.
  • Section 144 will remain imposed in districts falling under level 2.

Besides, districts falling under level 3,4 and 5 will see a limited lifting of restrictions.
