In the aftermath of the Central Health Ministry refuting that the sample of a woman being tested positive for the XE variant of COVID-19, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday, April 7, sent the sample to the Union-operated National Institute of Biomedical Genomics for reconfirmation in West Bengal, stated reports.

Earlier, Mumbai suburban guardian minister Aaditya Thackeray took to Twitter urging citizens to not panic. His tweet read, "The person with the suspected new variant has recovered fully & the high-risk contacts have been covid negative. The samples have been sent to NIBMG, to reconfirm the type of strain. We are constantly working to ensure that we are all safe. I urge people to not panic".

On Wednesday, April 6, the BMC had proclaimed the results of the 11th genome sequencing. In accordance with reports, from the 230 samples, 228 which is 99.13 per cent tested positive for Omicron, while one tested positive for the XE variant, another tested positive for the Kappa variant.

Based on accounts, BMC officials elucidated how a quality check was undertaken with the National Institute of Virology, Pune, before proclaiming the results. However, the Centre later claimed that the XE variant was comprehensively analyzed by experts of the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) who inferred that the genomic constitution of the said variant is not correlated with the genomic picture of the XE variant.
