According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a cyclonic circulation is currently located over the southeast Arabian Sea, and under its influence, a low-pressure area is very likely to form over the same region during the next 24 hours.

Moreover, cyclone Tauktae is reportedly to impact the coastal regions of Maharashtra and Goa. Accordingly, meteorologists have predicted heavy rains and thunderstorms over these areas from Saturday to Monday. In addition, it is likely to move across the southeast Arabian Sea and the adjoining Lakshadweep area, all the while intensifying gradually. This is likely to bring about rainfall across the upper west coast of India, effectively bringing unseasonal May showers to coastal Karnataka, Goa, and coastal Maharashtra which includes the capital city, Mumbai.

Even though Mumbai is not likely to suffer much damage, however, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started pruning several trees near COVID-19 centres in Mumbai. In particular, care is being taken to prevent trees from falling on oxygen tanks.

From May 15, IMD has advised fishermen on and off the coast of Maharashtra not to go to sea. Moreover, Ratnagiri, Pune, Solapur, Beed, Ahmednagar, Sindhudurg, Latur, Sangli and other places are likely to receive showers and hail.

On the other hand, several states along the west coast, including Maharashtra, had to face a natural cyclone in 2020. Cyclone Nisarga had caused severe damage in the Konkan districts of Maharashtra. Nisarga was the second cyclone to strike the Indian subcontinent within two weeks’ time after Cyclone Amphan, the first super cyclonic storm to have formed in the Bay of Bengal in the 21st century which devastated the state of West Bengal in May 2020.
