With a surge in the number of cases of coronavirus, Thane has implemented a lockdown from July 2 to July 12. In view of this lockdown, any non-essential activities are prohibited, along with the gathering of five or more people. The civic body has opined that this will help curb the ever-growing numbers.  

Maharashtra has already extended the lockdown in the state till July 31. Mumbai has witnessed an increased number of COVID-19 cases along with Navi Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan Dombivali. Navi Mumbai had earlier implemented a lockdown in some areas a couple of days back.

According to sources, the Thane district has added 1,561 new cases of COVID-19, taking the total count to 31,850. With the addition of 36 deaths, including 15 in Thane city, the number of fatalities has risen to 1,019 in the district. Thane city alone has reported 338 new cases. The number of cases in Thane now stands at 8,506, followed by 6,427 in areas under Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation.

Meanwhile, the recovery percentage in Thane district stood at 47.61 per cent whereas the mortality rate stood at 3.20 per cent. In neighbouring Palghar district, 346 people have tested positive on Monday for the coronavirus, taking the total count to 4,590.

Maharashtra, on June 29, reported 5,257 cases of coronavirus. The total number of cases of COVID-19 in Maharashtra now stands at 1,69,883. The state had earlier announced the lockdown to be extended till the end of July.

The death toll further rose to 7,610 as 181 patients succumbed to the disease, of which 78 died in the last 48 hours, and the rest 103 are deaths from the previous period. The number of recoveries increased by 2,385 in the last 24 hours to reach 88,960. As of June 29, there are 73,298 active cases in the state of Maharashtra.
